“But eventually it turned out that you had done both and had even invited the imperialist agency—the United Nations—to supervise the disarming of the People’s Liberation Army.
-From the Open Letter to United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) from the Communist Party of India (Maoist)
Every one of us must have been aware of the insidious act of genocide Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan Defence Ministry's website has recently published an article titled 'How meaningful are Jayalalitha's love letters to Narendra Modi?' on its website along with graphical photographs of Hon. Prime Minister of India and Hon. Ex-Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Though later the article was removed with an apology, it is not a single incident and it has been the routine and rhetoric of the government affiliated Media in Sri Lanka.
Thus our team that includes Dr. Devanathan, the president of Tamil Satellite Broadcasters Association, a well-known Media personality and a politician from Tamil Nadu and Mr. Remmy Musumpuka, a space scientist from Zambia and me wanted to take this atrocious act of Sri Lankan state sponsored media to the notice of honorable Secretary General of United Nations. Thus as assigned as the duty of the spokesperson of the team by the leader of the team Dr. Devanathan, I have written an email to Mr. Jamille Mc Cord, who is the personal secretary to Ban ki Moon, the honorable secretary general of United Nations. The content of the email is as follows:
“This mail is a request to seek an appointment with Honorable Secretary General to intervene in the negative and condemnable role is being played by the official Media in Sri Lanka. To substantiate my humble above given statement to you, Sri Lankan Defence Ministry's website recently published an article titled 'How meaningful are Jayalalitha's love letters to Narendra Modi?' on its website along with photographs of Hon. Prime Minister of India and Hon. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Though later the article was removed with an apology, it is not a single incident and it has been the routine and rhetoric of the government affiliated Media in Sri Lanka. On this occasion, we would like to request honorable Secretary General to intervene in this issue immediately and also we would like to humbly hand over a memorandum of request to him.”
After several attempts of both emails and telephonic conversations with his office, the matter was passed on to Ms. Chiyuki Kozuka, Political Affairs Officer, Asia and the Pacific Division, Department of Political Affairs, United Nations Headquarters and Ms. Kozuka-after a month delay-had responded to me on September 13 of 2014 as follows:
“Dr. Dharmaraja, Thank you for your message on 7 August to the Secretary-General with regard to the media situation in Sri Lanka. The UN has been closely monitoring developments in Sri Lanka, including the media situation. As you may know, the Secretary-General and President Rajapaksa issued a joint statement at the end of the war in May 2009, in which both addressed the importance and the need of a political solution for socio-economic development as well as the promotion and protection of human rights in keeping with international human rights standards and Sri Lanka's international obligations. Please find below a copy of the joint statement for your information. Thank you again for sharing your concern about the situation in Sri Lanka. Kind regards”.
And of course she had attached the joint press statement of both SG-UN and the neo-Hitler Rajapaksa. The irony is the press statement was issued on May, 2009, but we have been talking about the issue that happened before three months. So I had responded to her as follows:
“Dear Mr. Chiyuki Kozuka, Greetings! I am afraid that the press statement was issued on May, 2009. But unfortunately, the unethical behavior of state sponsored media in Sri Lanka has been a never ending story. As I have cited in my earlier email to UN Secretary General, the recent incident of malicious and unruly attack against the Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu happened before a month. So I think handing over a memorandum of request to the UN Secretary General holds stronger ground and of course it is the wish of more than one billion Indians. Expecting an appointment with UN Secretary General sooner than later."
But my request of handing over a memorandum of request to the GS of UN was rejected by citing the simple reason that “he is unavailable due to the upcoming session of the General Assembly and travel commitments” and of course our request to meet up with deputy secretary general of UN also turned down by citing the same reason of “all senior officials including the Deputy Secretary-General are not available for the upcoming General Assembly and other commitments”. But she put forward an alternative plan that “if our team wishes, she is happy to receive the memorandum of request and liaise it to respective offices of the Secretariat”. Nevertheless we had some objections, still we had accepted her proposal on the advice of the team leader Dr. Devanathan that taking this issue to the notice of UN is more important than the personality who we are going to talk to. At last, she agreed to meet our team on October 8 at 10 am and also she was happy to receive our memorandum of request and also to engage in a political discussion with our team leader Dr. Devanathan regarding the genocidal Sri Lanka.
The readers of this article might have come to the conclusion that everything was going well. On contrary, the email from her shocked us. Her email is as follows:
“Dear Dr. Dharmaraja, Thank you for confirming the visit. Please be informed that I will meet with your group at the lobby of the Millennium UN Plaza Hotel at 10am on Wednesday 8 October. Please see the below for directions: http://www.millenniumhotels.com/usa/oneunnewyork/hotel-location.html”
Indeed, we were shocked and felt ashamed to have learnt of the venue of our meeting, so I was forced to respond to her sharply but politely as follows:
“Dear Chiyuki Kozuka, Greetings! I am extremely afraid to bother you once again. Our team led by Dr. Devanathan, not at all, feeling comfortable in meeting you at the hotel lobby as we are going to discuss with you very important matter and also we are going to produce you very solid evidences against Sri Lankan government's state sponsored Media and it's atrocities against the humanity. Our team has worked hard for more than three months to collect evidence to substantiate our point of arguments. We humbly look forward to submit those evidences to you. In this scenario, we do not feel comfortable to put forth our arguments in a place such as lobby where too many disturbances can be foreseen. Let us humbly request you to change the venue of meeting to your office where we can have a fruitful discussion. Looking forward to hear from you positively, Regards”
Further we came down from our position-having the good cause we have been fighting for-by having written an email to her as follows:
“Dear Ms. Chiyuki, Greetings! If it is some conference hall also, i would be fine as we are looking forward to a convenient place in UNO to discuss this important matter.Regards”
But she-in a very cool-but cold manner- had responded to me as follows:
“Dear Dr. Dharmaraja, Thank you for your response. It is a usual procedure to hold meetings outside my office. Thank you for your kind understanding. Best, Chiyuki”
Though we had several telephonic conversations with her office, she was firm in having the meeting at the hotel lobby. Thus that forced me to respond to her on 6 October 2014 as follows:
“Dear Chiyuki Kozuka, Greetings! I am writing this email with lots of pain in my heart.
I have asked for the appointment with the honorable Secretary General of United Nations to intervene in the negative and condemnable role is being played by the official Media in Sri Lanka. To my request, you have responded to me on 13th September of 2014 stating that “The UN has been closely monitoring developments in Sri Lanka, including the media situation. Please find below a copy of the joint statement for your information”.
Further I have responded to your email stating that “I am afraid that the press statement was issued on May, 2009. So i think handing over a memorandum of request to the UN Secretary General holds stronger ground and of course it is the wish of more than one billion Indians”.
To my email, you have responded to meet our team led by Dr. Devanathan to hand over the memorandum of request to you-not in your office but in the hotel lobby.
Though I have made several attempts to request you-on behalf of the team and also its leader Dr. Devanathan, who is an acclaimed journalist and one of the most reputed personalities from India-you have repeatedly stressed that you would be meeting us at the hotel lobby.
Dear Ms. Kozuka, I am carefully writing this email to point out the possible imbalances and one sided nature of your office.
When I pointed out the atrocities of Sri Lankan media with recent examples (one happened before two months), you-who happened to be the protector of the human rights-unsuccessfully tried your level best to save the Sri Lankan state. You have sent us the joint press statement of SG of UN and Sri Lankan President that was issued in 2009 May. What an irony?!
Your email made me feel that yours is nothing but a possible failed attempt to save the Sri Lankan government!!. I humbly would like to bring to your notice that your statement itself shows us that the Sri Lankan government had failed to keep its word.
Now also-though many requests made from my office-your attempt of holding our meeting at the hotel lobby has encouraged me to have a possible doubt whether you want to paint the meeting unofficial by having it at the hotel lobby.
I am afraid that your actions of stating the age old press statement of Sri Lankan president and also the attempt to have the meeting in a hotel lobby have sown the seeds of doubt in our minds whether your office in United Nations has been trying its level best to save the face of inhuman Sri Lanka and its unethical Media.
Thus-once again-I humbly request you to make arrangements for us to meet the honorable Secretary General of UN and also to have our meeting officially at your office as a step to ensure that your office is not imbalanced and neutral. At the end of the day, we know the fact that your office is the last hope of the hopeless people of the world in general and India & Sri Lanka in particular. Expecting favourable response. Regards”
As a concluding remark, I would like to draw the attention of international community in general and Tamils in particular to come to the understanding with United Nations they have been believing in-bitter but truth. This United Nations that is believed to be entrusted with scared duty of protecting the human rights of the world has been carrying out exactly opposite to what it is supposed to do in order to save the humanity and justice. The email conversations of the most respected political officer of Ms. Chiyuki Kozuka with me have once again reaffirmed the allegiance of United Nations to the genocidal Sri Lanka and its state sponsored Medias. The hand in glove behavior of United Nations with the government of Sri Lanka has well proved that the UN is none but the agent of imperialism and wolf in sheep’s clothing. Tamils have to spearhead the duty of exposing the United Nations in all spectrums and we shall do so as it is the need of the hour.
